Leo J. Mayer, 89, of 207 Hampton St., Rudd, died Friday, February 19, 2010 at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Center in Osage.

A funeral Mass will be held for Leo on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at the Visitation Catholic Church, 604 North Broadway St., Stacyville, with Reverend John Moser officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City with military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. A visitation will be held on Monday, February 22, 2010 at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 North Hawkeye Ave., Nora Springs from 4 P.M. until 7 P.M.

Memorials may be directed to the Leo J. Mayer Memorial Fund.

Leo Joseph Mayer was born on October 2, 1920 in Stacyville, Iowa to Albert and Pauline Mayer. He enlisted in the Army following his schooling and served three years in New Guinea and the Philippines.

In August of 1961 Leo was united in marriage to Ila Novak, she preceded him in death. On September 7, 1996 he married Jessie Bennett of Rudd. He drove for H & M transport of Rudd for 32 years before his retirement.

Leo and Jessie enjoyed horses, especially their Black Percherons. He also enjoyed giving horseback rides and driving horses in local parades. Leo also loved his special dogs and cats and had a love of music.

Survivors include his wife Jessie, three step-children, Marvin Novak, Fort Madison, Iowa, Idella Shoars, Fort Madison, Iowa, and Francis (Bob) West, Kissimmee, Florida; three sisters, Germaine (Willard) Blake, Stacyville, Helen (Tony) Cerrotto, Brewster, New York, and Cecilia Meinders, Cedar Falls; one brother, Ed (Estelle) Mayer, Bella Vista, Arkansas; and a sister-in-law, Sylvia Mayer of Stacyville.

Preceding Leo in death are his parents, his first wife Ila, two brothers, Jerry Mayer and one in infancy, Paul Laverne.
