OBITUARY: John Johanson, 1879-1953

Last rites were held at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday at the Champion Funeral home in Osage for John Johanson, 73, who died Saturday at the Mitchell County Memorial hospital. A second service was held at 2 p.m. at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, with burial in the Rock Creek cemetery.

He was born on April 18, 1879, near St. Ansgar to Jens and Ingeborg Johanson and married Clara Shoger on September 13, 1903. The couple lived in Rock township southwest of Osage where he farmed for many years before retiring to Osage several years ago. His wife died in 1908; also preceding him in death were a sister, Mrs. Jennie Oursland; and three brothers, Oscar, Matthias, and Alfred.

Survivors include two sons, Arthur and Ingvald, both of Osage; two granddaughters; and three sisters, Mrs. Nettie Shoger and Mrs. Agnes Klemesrud, both of Osage and Mrs. Matilda Anderson of Mason City.

John Gustav Johanson (Johnson) was born April 17, 1879 near St Ansgar, Rock, Mitchell, Iowa to Jens Johannesen and Ingeborg Gulbrandsdatter, the first of their eight children.

John was baptized with the surname Johanson on May 22, 1879 at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa. His baptismal sponsors were: Mrs & Mrs Borger Larsen; Lars Borgersen and Maria Paulson.

Found in the 1880 - 1900 censuses living on a farm at Rock, Mitchell, Iowa:
1880: James Johnson 28, Isabell Johnson 28, John G. Johnson 1.
1900: Jens Johnson 48, Engibor Johnson 48, Gustav John Johnson 21, Anna A Johnson 19, Nettie Johnson 16, Oscar Johnson 14, Jennie Johnson 11, Matties Johnson 8, Matilda M Johnson 5, Alfred L Johnson 11/12.

John married Clara Louise Schoger (b February 11, 1881 Grand Forks, North Dakota, d June 1, 1908 Rock, Mitchell, Iowa) on September 13, 1903 at Rock Creek Lutheran, Meroa, Iowa.

The couple had two sons, both born in Rock Township:
Arthur Julius Johnson (b July 12, 1904, d April 29, 1988 Mitchell, Iowa) and
Ingvald Bernard Johnson (b May 1, 1906, d August 25, 1970 Mitchell, Iowa).

John Gustav Johanson died March 7, 1953 at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa and is buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery, Meroa, Iowa.
