Susanna Caroline (Huset) Simonsen, 1883-1928
Mrs. Martin (Susanna) Simonsen was born in Black River Falls, Wisconsin on January 14, 1883 one of seven children to Ole Andreassen Huset and Kari Andersdatter Huset. They were farmers in Jackson County, Wisconsin. Her father was appointed to public office in Jackson County, but he died in 1890.
In 1896 her mother was remarried to Charles Solomon. In the spring of 1905 the family came to St. Ansgar, Iowa. Mrs. Simonsen was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church, which has always been her spiritual home.
On December 6, 1905, she was married to Martin Simonsen, the ceremony being performed at St. Ansgar by the Rev. Urness. After their marriage they located on a farm in Rudd Township, Floyd County, and from there they moved to Downing, WI where they lived about two years. Later they moved to the old Simonsen homestead, where she lived until the time of her death. To his marriage one daughter, Evelyn, was born.
Her husband and daughter survive her. Other near relatives who survive include her mother, Mrs. Charles Solomon of St. Ansgar; two brothers: Clarence and Albert Huset, both of this community; three sisters: Mrs. John (Ida) Pederson of Mason City, Mrs. Carl (Effie) Johnson of Northwood, and Mrs. Iver (Alice) Halvorson of Osage.
Mrs. Simonsen had been in poor health about fifteen years and had submitted to three major operations. After the last operation she had felt fairly well until about six months ago. During this time she had received treatments at Mason City, and at the home of her sister in that city, death came suddenly on March 1st.
Her husband gave the beautiful testimonial: "She was a woman of a meek, reserved, and humble disposition, a true and kind wife and mother, and always willing to lend a helping hand, both in home and the church."
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. O.C. Myhre in the Rock Creek Lutheran church, March 4th, at 2 p.m. Interment was in the Rock Creek Lutheran cemetery.
