Philip M. McKinley Funeral Held Here Monday, January 26

Funeral services for Philip M. McKinley, 56, who died Saturday, January 24, 1976, at a Rochester, Minnesota hospital, were held Monday, January 26 at the Schroeder & Dunn Funeral Home here with the Reverend Don Callen officiating.

Phillip Myerly McKinley was born February 24, 1919 at the family farm in Newburg Township, the son of Harold L. and Josephine (Myerly) McKinley.

He attended St. Ansgar public schools and was graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1937. He was an active participant in all sports, and interest he maintained the rest of his life. He attended Iowa State College in Ames for two years where he studied forestry.

In May of 1941, sensing the imminence of the war, he enlisted in the U. S. Army. He served in Company 8, 168th Infantry Regiment of the 34th Division as a sergeant, participating in the invasion of Africa and the African campaign. During the last few days of that campaign he was taken prisoner, but was then released upon the surrender of his captors. He then served in the Italian campaign in the mountains of Italy until exposure and frozen feet resulted in his hospitalization and subsequent discharge from the Army. He spent many months in the front lines of both Africa and Italy receiving a number of battle stars and Combat Infantryman’s badge.

Returning to St. Ansgar he entered into a partnership with his father and brothers in farming and in the sale of new cars and farm machinery, continuing this affiliation until his death. He was a director of Carpenter Savings Bank.

Phyllis Reeves and Philip McKinley were united in marriage June 24, 1947. They made their home in St. Ansgar until moving to the McKinley family rural home in Newburg Township two years ago.

Preceding him in death were one daughter, Marcia and his parents.

Survivors include his wife Phyllis; three daughters, Mrs. Bradley Randall (Ann) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Jane of Chicago and Priscilla, at home; two sons, William of Ames and Phillip at home, one granddaughter, three brothers: Don and Hal of St. Ansgar, and Keith of Osage; nieces and nephews; and his step-mother, Mrs. Pauline (Roach) McKinley of Plainfield, Iowa.
