OBITUARY: Gladys Ivey Olsen Ketelsen
[1907-2001]
Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 28, 2001 at 10:30 am at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage for Gladys Ketelsen, age 94, of Osage. Rev. Dennis Hanson and Rev. Roy Ott will officiate. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 pm to 8 pm, Thursday evening at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage.
Gladys died on Monday, September 24, 2001 at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.
Gladys Ivey Olsen Ketelsen was born Feb. 7, 1907 on the Hume farm one mile south of St. Ansgar the daughter of Chris and Clara (Anderson) Olsen. She grew up in the St. Ansgar and Carpenter areas and graduated in 1926 from Carpenter High School. Gladys was united in marriage to Elmer Ketelsen on March 23, 1930 on Sunday evening at the First Lutheran Church parsonage in St. Ansgar.
Gladys and Elmer resided on the Ketelsen farm in Burr Oak Township for 35 years then they moved to the Olsen farm southwest of Stacyville to live for 13 years. In 1978 they moved to Osage. Gladys had been a resident of Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar since 1996.
In her youth, Gladys was baptized and confirmed at the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar. She acted in numerous plays in high school. She was a very active member of Burr Oak community, Women’s Farm Bureau, sang with the Sweet Adelines and was a member of the Elizabeth Circle of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. She enjoyed her family, gardening, sewing, cooking, painting, genealogy and many other hobbies.
Gladys and Elmer were the parents of four children; Dixie, Daisie, Dean and Dale.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer; three children, Dixie Schroeder, Daisie Olsen and Dean Ketelsen; a son-in-law Rudy Schroeder; a granddaughter, Sherie Schroeder; an infant brother, Geral and two brothers, Glen Olsen and Garman Olsen.
Gladys is survived by a son, Dale Ketelsen and wife, Pat of Baton Rouge, LA; a son-in-law, Laverne Olsen of Osage, a daughter-in-law, Karen Ketelsen of Osage and a sister, Gail Olsen of St. Ansgar; 14 grandchildren; Bill Schroeder of Orchard, Kristy and Nick Ortiz of West Des Moines, David and Rhonda Schroeder of Osage, Deidre and Bernie Badker of Columbus, OH, Lon and Laurie Olsen of Kensett, Lance Olsen of Osage, Danell Johnson of Osage, Kurt Ketelsen of Wilmington, NC, Kymm and Bob Galligan of New Hampton, Kent Ketelsen of Osage, Kyra and Dan Berentsen of Riceville, Craig and Emily Ketelsen of Covington, LA, Erik and Bonnie Ketelsen of Atlanta, GA, Penny Ketelsen of Nashville, TN; 26 great-randchildren and several nieces and nephews.
