OSAGE, IOWA — Funeral services for Harvey Risse, 67, former state chaplain of the American Legion and for many years superintendent of schools in North Iowa, will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Champion Funeral Home. The Rev. H. E. Trimble, pastor of the Church of Christ at Clear Lake, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Luther Berven of the Osage Lutheran Church. Military rites will be held at the Mitchell cemetery by the American Legion.

Mr. Risse died Tuesday at a rest home in Mason City where he had been a patient since last July.

He began his school administrative work as superintendent at Marble Rock in 1925. The same year he was married to Bernice Ruth Jones at Plymouth. She is at present an instructor in the Osage schools.

Mr. Risse served as superintendent at St. Ansgar from 1929 to 1937, later at Mitchell and at Orchard. He retired in June, 1953, because of ill health.

Survivors are his wife; two brothers, a twin, Howard, Iowa Falls, and Charles, Hubbard; and four sisters, Hattie Boeke and Emma Thorton, both of Hubbard; Mrs. Kenneth Luhman, Radcliffe, and Mrs. Donald McCoy, Iowa Falls.

He took specialized graduate work at the Chaplain's Training School, Louisville, Kentucky, just after his entrance into the Army, entering as a private, being later commissioned a first lieutenant.

Following his discharge it was necessary to assist in family affairs on the home farm to help his widowed mother, and during that time served as pastor of the Community Church, Point Pleasant, and the Evangelical Church, Buckeye.

He later served as pastor at the Community Church, Mitchell, Church of Christ, Charles City, Church of Christ, Fertile, and Church of Christ, Nora Springs.

Risse Dies;

Former Educator — Harvey F. Risse, 67, former school administrator and legislator, died Tuesday in a rest home at Mason City.

He was born September 21, 1887, on a farm southwest of Hubbard, Iowa, the son of Chris and Emma Risse, and was graduated from Hubbard High School.

Risse received his AB degree from Ellsworth College, Iowa Falls, and his MA from Drake University, Des Moines, and did graduate work, at University of Iowa, Iowa State College and Northwestern University.

He served Marble Rock as school superintendent for four years, St. Ansgar for eight years and was superintendent at Mitchell and Orchard for 15 years. He was a teacher before he went into administrative work.

Deceased served as Mitchell County representative in the 48th and 49th General- Assemblies, was a former department chaplain of the American Legion and served in the chaplain corps of the U. S. Army during World War H. He was commissioned a captain and was discharged with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He served as pastor of the Community Point church at Point Pleasant, Iowa; Evangelical Church at Buckeye, Community Church at Mitchell and the Church of Christ at Charles City, Fertile and Nora Springs.

He had served as president of the Tri-Mitchell Farm Institute, chaplain of the convalescent center at Camp Dodge, and national president of the American Conference of Undenominational Churches of America.

Risse was the originator of Student Life Work Conferences that developed into Career Days in Iowa high schools.

He married Miss Bernice Jones, an Osage school teacher, Sept. 2, 1925.

Surviving are his widow; two brothers, Howard, Iowa Falls, his twin, and Charles, Hubbard; four sisters, Mrs. Hattie Boeke and Mrs. Emma Thornton, Hubbard; Mrs. Kenneth Luhman, Radcliffe, and Mrs. Donald McCoy, Iowa Falls.

His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 2 p. m. Thursday at the Champion Funeral Home here, with Rev. H. E. Trimble, pastor of the Church of Christ at Clear; Lake officiating, assisted by Rev. Luther Bervin, Osage Lutheran Church pastor. Military rites at the grave in Oak Grove cemetery at Mitchell will be in charge of Mitchell American Legion Post No. 278.
