Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at Deer Creek church near Carpenter for Frank Culbertson who died at his home at Carpenter on Friday, August 16, following a heart attack.
Frank Culbertson was born May 20, 1863 at Gol, Hallingdal, Norway. He was the sixth child in a family of 11 children and at the age of four years he migrated with his parents to America. Of this trip he often recounted definite remembrances of the perilous ocean voyage which required seven weeks on a sail boat that was none to seaworthy even in that day.
Arriving in America the family settled on a farm southeast of St. Ansgar. A few years later moved to Carpenter living with friends until logs could be worked up and built into a log house on a farm southwest of Carpenter. Here he lived his youth attending the country school a few months out of the year, herding cattle and cultivating the wild prairie land of his day.
On October 7, 1877, he was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the First Lutheran church in St. Ansgar, Iowa by Pastor John Olson.
During his young manhood he worked as a farm hand in the community of Carpenter except for two years spent in the Dakotas on large farm ranches.
On September 8, 1892, he was married to Carrie Thon, at Bolan, Iowa by the Rev. John Olson. He and his bride immediately established their home southwest of Carpenter which was to be his home uninterrupted until retirement. His home was blessed with four children, three sons, Floyd of Waverly, Iowa; Irwin of Knoxville, Iowa; Noris of Carpenter and one daughter, Mayme, Mrs. H.W. Parrott of Tripoli, Iowa. All were present at the funeral except Irwin who is a patient at the Veteran's hospital at Knoxville, Iowa.
In 1925, Mr. and Mrs. Culbertson retired to a home in Carpenter where he lived until his death Friday, August 16, 1940 from a most sudden heart attack. His age at death was seventy seven years, two months and twenty six days.
Mr. Culbertson had enjoyed a lifetime of extraordinary good health. His first illness occurred about two years ago when he was taken to Rochester for observation and treatment of a heart condition complicated by a gall bladder ailment. From this illness he made a reasonably good recovery.
During his lifetime he was a most devoted husband and father, his family and home always being his first concern. On Monday previous to his death together with other members of his family motored to Knoxville to visit Irwin.
The deceased is revered by all who knew him for his integrity, righteousness and his identity with church and all worthy affairs of the community.
In addition to being survived by his immediate family, he leaves six grandchildren, two brothers; C.M. Culbertson, Carpenter, Olavus Culbertson, Northwood, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Ruud, Carpenter, Mrs. Lena Lee, Aberdeen, So. Dakota; many nieces and nephews, toghter with a host of neighbors and friends who genuinely mourn his passing. Burial was made at the First Lutheran cemetery at St. Ansgar.
