Services for Victim of Auto Accident to Take Place Tomorrow
Rites for Ferd Wold, whose tragic death last Sunday night saddened this community, will take place at the First Lutheran Church at ten o’clock Thursday morning. Burial will be made in the church cemetery.
Out of respect to the memory of the man who held a prominent place in the business and civic life of the town for 14 years, all business places will close during the time of the funeral, Mayor John Bernstein said yesterday.
Ferdinand Wold, the son of Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Wold, was born at St. Olaf March 7, 1883. He attended school there and when he was of age went to Velva, North Dakota, where he was engaged in business for eleven years.
In 1917 he was united in marriage to Anna Chilson of Velva and to this union three children were born, Paul, Jean Ann and Jimmie.
The family moved to St. Ansgar in 1920 and Mr. Wold was associated with his brother Andrew in the hardware store here. In 1932 Wilmer Rosel bought Andrew’s interest and since that time the sotre has been operated under the firm name of Wold and Rosel.
He is survived by his wife, three children, three brothers, John of Oswego, Montana, Harrison of St. Olaf and Andrew of St. Ansgar, and five sisters, Mrs. Olive Livdahl of Bismark, North Dakota, Mrs. Bertha Gilbertson of Towner, North Dakota, Mrs. Mollie Olson of Pasadena, California, Mrs. Lillian Engelehardt of St. Olaf, and Mrs. Viola Holt of Salome.

St. Ansgar Accident Victim
Survived by Wife and 3 Children.
ST. ANSGAR, Sept. 14. - Funeral services were held Thursday in the First Lutheran church for Ferd Wold, 49, who was killed in an auto accident 4 1/2 miles east of Riceville Sunday night, while on the way home from Elkader from attending his father's funeral. The Rev. Mr. Langehough was in charge of the funeral here.
Mr. Wold was born at St. Olaf, March 7, 1883. He attended school here, and when of age went to Velva, N. Dakota, where he engaged in business for seven years.
In 1917 he was married to Anna Chilson of Velva and to this union three children were born, Paul, Jean Ann and Jimmie.
The family moved to St. Ansgar in 1920 and Mr. Wold was associated with his brother, Andrew, In the hardware store. Since 1932 he has been associated with Wilmer Rosel who bought Andrew's interest.
He is survived by his wife, three children, three brothers, John of Oswego, Mont., Harrison of St. Olaf and Andrew of St. Ansgar and five sisters, Mrs. Olive Livdahl of Bismarck, N. THROWN OUT WHEN THE CAR
STRIKES LARGE BOULDERS
IN THE DITCH
Thrown from the car in which he was riding when it swerved from the road and crashed into a ditch at a dangerous corner four and a half miles east of Riceville, Ferd Wold, 49, hardware merchant here for 14 years, died almost instantly of a broken neck, at about 8:15 o’clock last Sunday night.
Mrs. Wold was also thrown from the car and sustained a severely wrenched back At. First it was thought she was injured internally, but her condition has been improving rapidly. John Wold, brother of Ferd, who was driving the car, a Ford truck, received only a cut on his upper lip. Two children of Mr. and Mrs. Wold, Jean Ann and Jimmie, were asleep in the box of the truck. Jean received a sprained ankle and Jimmie was cut on the forehead.
The family was returning from Elkader where they had attended the funeral of T. A. Wold, father of Ferd and John, Saturday afternoon. The corner where the accident occurred on highway No. 9 is hidden by a hill and according to reports, a mail box obscures the highway sign.
The car succeeded in rounding the corner which is banked steeply but went into the ditch where the road leels out before the turn is completed. It is thought that the cab door was flung open as the car hit a larg boulder and Mrs. Wold, who was seated on the outside, was thrown out, then as the car crushed into a larger boulder, Ferd was tossed from the car.
Ferd who was lying beside the car, was dying when John reached him. A short while later a car occupied by Mr. Nelson of Northwood arrived and a doctor came later. First aid was given to the injured and they were taken to a nearby farm home.
Wilmer Rosel, partner of Mr. Wold in the hardware store, was notified of the accident and he and his wife arrived at the scene at ten o’clock. The coroner from Cresco arrived at the same time. Mrs. Wold, John Wold and the two children returned here with Mr. and Mrs. Rosel. An examination showed that Ferd’s neck had been broken and his chest crushed. The body had no cuts or bruises.
The truck was brought here Monday. The front axle and transmission were damaged by the boulder which was dragged for several yards, and the door on the right side was badly damaged. Glass in the doors and rear window was broken and a hub cap on the rear right wheel was smashed. It is not believed that the car turned over and righted itself. The truck had passed the guard rail on the corner before it left the road.
