RICEVILLE, IOWA - Julia Bird, 99, of Riceville, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home in Stacyville.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville, with the Rev. Paul Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today, Tuesday, at the Lindstrom Funeral Home, 401 E. Main St. in Riceville, and one hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Julia Bird, age 99, of Riceville, passed away on Sunday November 29, 2009 at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home in Stacyville, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville, Iowa on Wednesday December 2, 2009 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Paul Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Riceville. Friends may call on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009 during the hours of 4-6 p.m. and one hour before services at the funeral home on Wednesday.
Julia Elvira Bird was born on November 10, 1910, near Bassett, Iowa, to Robert and Leora (Smith) Wiegle. Julia attended local rural schools and at age ten moved with her family to Riceville. She graduated from Riceville High School and attended Normal College.
On October 26, 1932, Julia was united in marriage to Louis Franklin Bird at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They were hired by Hugh Minnis on a farm near McIntire, Iowa. In 1936, they moved to a farm near Little Cedar, and in 1939, they purchased that farm. In 1960, they moved to Riceville to live in her mother's home on Woodland Avenue. She later entered the Stacyville Community Nursing Home, where she enjoyed visits from her extended family. Julia worked as a school teacher in her early years and was a cook at the Riceville Rest Home. In her later years, Julia and Louis were in charge of the Congregate Meals in Riceville for over ten years. She was a member of the Riceville Baptist Church.
Julia enjoyed going to garage sales and public auctions. She liked to sew, crochet, and refinish and re-cane furniture.
Survivors include her son: Dale Mason Bird and his wife Carol of Winona, Minnesota, a daughter: Jean Lois Kurkowski and her husband Larry of Jacksonville, Florida, two grandchildren: Stuart and his wife Carol Kurkowski and their children Kayla and Jason of Beavercreek, Ohio, and Shayla and her husband Travis and their children Maxwell and Mason of Jacksonville, Florida. Also surviving is a brother: Melvin "Pete" Wiegle of Riceville, Iowa. Julia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Louis, and two brothers, Everett and Neldon Wiegle.
