Voe Ellen Colburn, 83

Voe Ellen "Tag" Colburn, age 83, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center where she had lived for three years.

She was born Sept. 23, 1917, in Osage, Iowa, to John and Estella (Donner) Shumate. She moved with her family to the Dexter area around 1934.

Voe worked for Hormels but quit at the time she married Claude Colburn. They were married Oct. 18, 1937, in Austin. The lived in the Dexter area until 1944 when they moved to a farm near Nashua, Iowa where they worked for a large cattle buyer for five years before they started farming for themselves. They farmed in the Nashua, Republic and Ionia, Iowa areas until their retirement in 1978. At that time, they moved to Austin then to Grand Meadow in 1984.

She was the president of the P.T.A., member of the Farm Bureau, president of the Ladies Aid and a 4-H leader. She loved playing cards, music and going to many dances with her husband, Claude.

Survivors include her husband Claude, Grand Meadow Health Care Center; daughter, Ellen (Roger) Jensson, Grand Meadow; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Wayne (Betty) Shumate, Austin; sisters-in-law, Verla Shumate, Sumner, Iowa; Esther Shumate, Fredericksburg, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, four sisters, and eight nieces and nephews.

Service: 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at the United Church, in Grand Meadow, with the Rev. Tom Wilson officiating.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home, Grand Meadow, and one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.

Interment: Osage, Iowa, Cemetery.
