Sylvester J. Pitzen, 90

Sylvester J. Pitzen, 90, of Stacyville, Iowa, died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

He was born Sept. 29, 1910, in Adams, to Joseph and Anna (Simon) Pitzen.

He married Dorothy Coan June 27, 1933, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City, Iowa. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing and taxidermy. He worked for the Stacyville Co-op Company for 48 years, 43 years as an elevator manager. He also farmed and raised Murray-Gray cattle. He was an active 4-H leader and a member of the Foresters and the Knights of Columbus. He was on the board of directors for FELCO, FELCO-STATEC, and Land 'O Lakes.

Survivors include his three sons, Tom Pitzen, Stacyville, Iowa; Nick Pitzen, Stacyville; Steve Pitzen, Adams; a daughter, Mary Ellen McGlashing, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Father John Pitzen, Fairfax, Iowa; two sisters, Agnes Casley, Beaverton, Ore.; and Marie Montavon, DeKalb, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; his son, John; brothers, Gervin, Clem and Al.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville with the Rev. Joseph Schneider officiating.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. tonight at Visitation Catholic Church with a 4:30 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. prayer service. Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home of St. Ansgar is in charge of arrangements.

Interment: Visitation Cemetery
