BELIEVE OSAGE YOUTH DOZED AT STEERING WHEEL

OSAGE, IOWA -- Kenneth Howe, 21, of Osage, was instantly killed about 2 a.m. Saturday when the automobile he was driving plunged off a sharp curve in highway 18 near the east edge of Rudd, struck a tree and caromed off into a barricade of railroad ties erected to protect the Oscar Felix home near the curve.

It was believed that young Howe fell asleep at the wheel. A 14-foot railroad tie was driven completely thru his car from front to back and pinned the driver inside. He died of a fractured skull and other serious injuries.

The youth who lived on a farm one and one-half miles southwest of Osage, had been to Charles City earlier in the evening amd it is believed that he decided to go home by a different route, thru Rudd.

Scene of Many Mishaps

It was reported that the curve where he met death has been the scene of more than 50 automobile accidents, many of them serious, in the last few years. Their frequency is said to have caused Felix to erect the barricade to protect his residence.

Kenneth leaves his mother, Mrs. Olive Howe, of near Osage; two sisters, Mrs. Lester Huesmann, Osage, and a twin, Clara, at home; and two brothers, Louis, near Mitchell, and Harold, living north of St. Ansgar.

Kenneth had been operating the home farm for his mother. His father, Alexander Howe, was killed July 16, 1921, in an automobile accident north of St. Ansgar.

Funeral services for Kenneth Howe will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Champion funeral Home, Osage, with Rev. Harry Risse in charge. Burial will be in the Osage cemetery.
