Building at Grand View
University Named for
Toeterville Couple

By David Namanny, For The Globe Gazette North Iowa Media Group

TOETERVILLE — A new dormitory at Grand View University in Des Moines has been named in honor of the late Rev. Dr. Karl Langrock, a Mitchell County native.

A special dedication ceremony took place in late August when the Grand View University board of trustees officially named the Karl F. and Rose Marie Langrock Suites in honor of the couple.

Karl’s relative, Fred Langrock of Toeterville, attended the special ceremonies.

Karl Langrock, who was born in Toeterville, died in 2009 and is buried in the Toeterville Cemetery.

“He was always proud of the fact that his great grandfather founded the village of Toeterville,” said Fred Langrock. “He also established an endowment scholarship for the friends of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church to attend Luther, Wartburg or Grand View each year.”

Karl Langrock served as president of Grand View from 1972 to 1988. During that time, he led the school’s transition from a junior college to a liberal arts, baccalaureate degree-granting institution.

Enrollment at Grand View grew nearly 50 percent during Langrock’s tenure and his presidency oversaw construction of the new Student Center and Cowles Communication Center. Many considered his leadership to have preserved the institution’s future.

The new dorm will provide housing for more than 180 of the university’s 1,600 students.

“It will be a lasting tribute to Karl and his contributions which he made during his lifetime,” said Fred Langrock.

David Namanny is editor of the Mitchell County Press-News, a Lee Enterprises newspaper.
