Hans Knudson

Hans Knudson was born at Hadalen [SIC ?], Norway, December 6, 1820, and died at the home of his son near St. Ansgar, June 13, 1903, being, therefore, 83 years, 6 months, and 7 days of age. He grew to manhood in his native country and learned the trade of a blacksmith.

In 1845 he was united in marriage to Miss Wase Larson.

On June 9, 1850 they started for America. The trip from Christiania to New York took two weeks, and from New Your to Milwaukee it took four weeks. They resided in Muskego, Wisconsin for a year and at Rock Prairie for about three years, then they came to St. Ansgar and settled on a farm just west of the river which was his home until his death.

Mr. Knudson had a shop on his farm and worked at his trade until about four years ago when failing sight compelled him to stop. He was noted for being one of the best blacksmiths in the country.

His wife died in 1880 and for the past twenty years he has resided with his son, Hans H. on the old farm.

Five children survive him; these are: Hans, H., of this place, and Lewis H., of Veblen, South Dakota; Mrs. Andrew Dynna, of Rock Creek, Mrs. T. Andrew Elverum, of Kensett, and Mrs. Chenous, of Argyle, Wisconsin. They were all present at the funeral except Mrs. Chenous.
