Mrs. Monrad Houg Funeral Held at First Lutheran

Funeral services for Mrs. Monrad A. Houg, 63, who died November 11, 1964 were held at First Lutheran Church, Friday, November 13 at 2 P.M. with the Reverend Don Comnick officiating.

Alphild Margaret (Swisdal) Houg was born August 30, 1901 at Crookston, Minnesota, the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Swisdal. She was baptized and confirmed in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church at Crookstron. After receiving her public school training she was graduated from the Crookston High School in 1918. from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota in June, 1922. Following her graduation from St. Olaf College she taught high school mathematics at Carpenter, one year and at Fergus Falls Minnesota three years.

June 26, 1826, she was united in marriage to Monrad A. Houg at the Swisdal cottage, near Crookston, Minnesota, then coming to St. Ansgar to make their home. Three children were born to the couple.

Mrs. Houg had been an active church member in the women’s organizations of the First Lutheran Church. She had a strong interest in the circle of work of the church and was awarded a life membership for her service, and also held office at local and conference level. She was a member of the St. Ansgar Library Board from the time of it’s organization and took an active part in the Woman’s Study Club and numerous other civic organizations and activities.

She had always been in very good health until September 15. Five weeks were spent in Rochester, Minnesota where she received treatment and submitted to surgery. She died peacefully at her home the early morning of November 11.

Surviving are her husband, a son, Dr. Andrew M. Houg, Seattle, Washington; two daughters, Margaret (Mrs. Dick Lenz) Mason City, Elizabeth (Mrs. David Q. Storie) Ft. Benning, Georgia; eight grandchildren; one brother, Lloyd Swisdal, Cerookston, Minnesota; and a niece, Mrs. Helen Skaar of Lansing, Michigan.

Burial was in the First Lutheran Cemetery with Reverend Comnick in charge of the rites.
