Funeral services for Monrad Houg, 96, who died Wednesday, April 22, 1992, were held Saturday, April 25 at First Lutheran Church here with Reverend Robert Porisch officiating.

Monrad Arndt Karlen Houg was born February 26, 1896 in St. Ansgar, the son of Halsten S. and Helene (Groth) Houg. He attended St. Ansgar school, graduating from high school in 1914. Monrad then attended and graduated from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota in 1918.

He then served his country during World War I in the Chemical Warfare Division of the United States Army.

Monrad was married to Alphild Zwesdal on June 26, 1926, in Maple Lake, Minnesota. They lived in St. Ansgar where Monrad worked at the St. Ansgar Citizens Bank until 1933. In 1933 he bought the interest of H. K. Dahl in the Funeral and furniture business and became partner with O. G. Schroeder. Monrad remained in this business until 1967.

He married Emma Comnick in 1970. He became a resident of the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center in 1986.

Monrad was a member of the American Legion, Lions Club and First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, stamp collecting, music and sports. Monrad appreciated the people of St. Ansgar and the relationship he had with them as a businessman and a citizen of St. Ansgar.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Alphild in 1964 and wife Emma in 1973, three sisters, Clara, Selma and Senoria; one brother Monrad I.

He is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Storie of Harker Heights, Texas, and Margaret Lenz of Hutchingson, Minnesota; one son, Dr. Andrew Houg of Seattle, Washington; ten grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren.

Military honors for the funeral were provided by the Walter T. Enneberg Post 358 of the American Legion, St. Ansgar.

Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, was in charge of arrangements.
