Elsie Ostenson Funeral Held First Lutheran
Funeral services for Miss Elsie Ostenson 77, who died at her home in St. Ansgar Tuesday February 27, were held Saturday, March 2, 1968, at the First Lutheran Church, with Rev. Don Comnick officiating. Burial was in the Six Mile Grove Cemetery near Lyle, Minnesota.
Elsie Theolina Ostenson was born in Nevada Township, More county, Minnesota in 1890. She was the daughter of John and Amelia Ostenson, the fourth of seven children. She attended rural schools until the parents decided to move to Lyle where it would be more convenient for the children to continue their education. Three of the daughters had already decided on teaching careers. Elsie graduated from the Southern Minnesota Normal College, Austin, where she received her certificate and was permitted to teach at the age of 17 years. Later she taught at DeWitt, Iowa and at Otranto, and then joined the staff at St. Ansgar where she spent her happiest years since she could enjoy her home at the same time and found so many congenial coworkers. In 1955, after 48 years of service, she retired, but continued as a substitute. Every call brought her happiness, it was the work she loved most.
Miss Ostenson was confirmed in the Six Mile Grove church and remained true to the Lutheran faith. She had taken an active part in church work, performing the tasks with willingness, and since she enjoyed excellent health, no task was too hard. Her faith in the Lord was expressed in many ways and it was because of her faith that she could endure the suffering so patiently when she was stricken with cancer in the summer of 1967. After surgery and later when treatments failed to relieve her, she was permitted to leave Mitchell County Memorial Hospital in Osage where she had been for many weeks and spend her last days in her own home.
She leaves to mourn her death, three sisters: Mrs. Arnt (Lillian) Pederson, Mound, Minnesota; Mrs. R. B. (Esther) Hammond, Radcliffe, and Miss Cora Ostenson, St. Ansgar; also many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
