PRAIRIE du CHEIN, Wis. - Violet J. Otteson, 83, of Osage, formerly of Prairie du Chien, Wis., died Friday (Aug. 28, 2009) at Mitchell County Regional Medical Center in Osage after a short illness.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien, Wis. Friends may call at the church beginning at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. There will also be a visitation from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Violet was born Sept. 12, 1925, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to Walter and Ethel (Olsen) May. She attended community college in the Pittsburgh area. She worked for the Navy building ships during World War II.

Violet married Ernest Otteson June 14, 1947, at Verona, Pa. They moved to Prairie du Chien in 1947, and later lived in Fond du Lac, Wis., from 1954 to 1958, then returned to Prairie du Chien. Vi was active in her church and community affairs. Violet and Ernest moved to Lansing, in 1979, where Vi worked as a cook at Thornton Manor Care Center. They have lived in Osage for the past 10 years.

She is survived by her husband, Ernest Otteson; son, Michael (Marianne) Otteson of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; daughters, Sue (Gary) Parr of Brownsville, Minn., Amy Otteson of Tampa, Fla., Sarah (Kent) Shultz of Osage; grandchildren: Alex, David, Jenny, Matt, Tom, Kelly, Sarah, Kaitlyn, Nolan, Mollie and Isaac; great-grandson, Christopher; brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Gretta Otteson of Prairie du Chien; and nieces and nephews.

The Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien assisted the family, 608-326-8524.
