Lucius FASSETT was born in Genesee county, NY., July 14, 1825, and died at the home of his step daughter, Mrs. H. A. RUSSELL, at Riceville, Iowa, on the morning of July 31st, 1909, being 84 years and 17 days of age.
Mr. Fassett was the second youngest of a family of sixteen children and spent his early boyhood days upon a farm in his native state. At the age of seventeen, he gave his heart to God and became an active Christian, encouraged by his father who was a local preacher in the Methodist church.
In 1842 he left the old home and came west to Darlington, Wis., where in 1851 he was united in marriage to Mary Ann SPENCER on Christmas Day. In 1855 Mr. Fassett and his family came farther west to Riceville and preempted a farm just north of town. There were born to them six children; one of whom died in infancy, five of the children growing to man and womanhood, another daughter dying some years ago.
In January 1864, the wife passed to the great beyond; and in February of the same year, Mr. Fassett enlisted in the army and served until its close. On his discharge, he returned to Riceville, and in 1868, on Sept. 14th, was married to Mrs. Martha WARREN, who was then living in Elgin, Iowa. They immediately took up their residence at Riceville, where they lived until 1882, when they moved to Crow Wing county, Minnesota.
Some months ago, Mr. and Mrs. Fassett came back to Riceville, expecting to secure themselves a home and live the remainder of their days here. But shortly after their arrival they both fell upon poor health. Some weeks ago, Mr. Fassett grew rapidly worse, and last Saturday passed peacefully to his heavenly home.
There remain to mourn his death a loving wife, four children, Chester M. of Brookings, S. Dak., Clara S. Hazelton of Marrifield, Minn., Edwin L. of Bennetville, Minn., George S. of Bonnydoon, Canada; also four step-children, Willard A. Warren of Vineland, Minn., Freeman E. Warren of Fergus Falls, Minn., Ella E. Warren of Brainerd, Minn., and Mrs. H. A. Russell of Riceville, Iowa; the last two named being the only children present at the funeral. Twenty-nine grandchildren and a host of other friends and relatives are left to mourn his death, but their loss is his eternal gain.
The funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. Will Kirwin, assisted by Rev. F. L. Burns, pastor of the Free Methodist church, and the remains were laid to rest in Riverside cemetery Aug. 2, the G.A.R. holding their burial service at the open grave.
