FUNERAL RITES HELD SATURDAY FOR R. LUBIENS

HISTORY OF ST. ANSGAR IS CLOSELY ALLIED WITH LIFE OF R.C. LUBIENS

Funeral services were held for Robert C. Lubiens, age 77, from the Methodist church, here last Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. W. F. Belling in charge of the services.

Robert C. Lubiens was born October 25, 1862 at Leeds, Wisconsin, and died November 8, 1939 at Independence, Iowa. He was the son of Henry and Ernestine Lubiens, who were natives of Germany.

Henry Lubiens built a two-story brick building in St. Ansgar and founded a general merchantile business, where Rob Lubiens, as he was familiarly and affectionately know, began his business career. The store building is now occupied by West Brothers and Company Clothing.

On September 18, 1889, he married Alice DeLaney and last September 18, marked the Golden anniversary of their marriage. Two children, Mrs. Sherwin A. Kleinwort of St. Ansgar and Miss Naomi Lubiens of Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Minnie Steurwald of St. Ansgar, a sister; four grandchildren and two great granddaughters, survive to aid and comfort Mrs. Lubiens in her bereavement.

Since the early nineties, and for the thirty years thereafter, the history of St. Ansgar is the history of Rob Lubiens, writ upon its pages in indelible ink.

He was the founder and charter member of the Commercial Club. He started the St. Ansgar Packing Company, the Woodworking Company in the building now occupied by the Peter Fox Sons Company, the waterworks and many other enterprises. For thirty years beginning in 1892 he was the guiding hand of the St. Ansgar Bank, know at home and abroad for his sagacity, tolerance and good judgment.

He was public spirited, giving freeley of his time and money to any worthy cause irrespective of creed or purpose.

Rob Lubiens was not particularly a believer in creeds, but was a staunch Free Mason and endeavored to pattern his life on the teachings of the good book and the Golden Rule.

The good which men do live after them, and the good deeds of Rob Lubiens will live in the hearts of those who knew and understood him. No man who is adoer of deeds can avoid making mistakes or making enemies, else his life has been lived in vain.

Rob Lubiens brought into this commumity the spirit of helpfulness, good will, fair play and left an impress that will keep his work alive in the memory book of the St. Ansgar community which he served so faithfully for so many years.
