R. C. Lubiens is occupying an enviable position in financial circles in Mitchell county, being the manager of the Saint Ansgar Bank of St. Ansgar. He has been a close student of financial problems and of all questions relating to the banking business and his long experience, comprehensive knowledge and unflagging enterprise have been the salient features in the upbuilding of the institution and the attainment of his success.

A native of Wisconsin, Mr. Lubiens was born in Leeds, October 25, 1862, a son of Henry Lubiens, whose birth occurred in Hanover, Germany, June 3, 1833. The latter was the fourth in order of birth in a family of ten children and acquired his education in Germany, where he remained until he reached the age of sixteen years and then crossed the Atlantic to the new world.

He established his home in Columbia county, Wisconsin, and afterward removed to New Orleans, where he remained until 1856. He then returned to his native land, where he spent nine months, and during that period he was married to Miss Ernestina Ditzel, who was also born in Hanover in 1833. They became the parents of five children: Mathilda, Robert C., Minnie, Alice, and Lillie. Following his marriage Mr. Lubiens brought his bride to the United States and in connection with his brother, E. C. Lubiens, he engaged in merchandising at Newburg until 1869. He then removed to St. Ansgar and for many years was a very active and prominent factor in its business circles.

In 1880 he erected a large two-story brick store building and for an extended period was actively engaged in merchandising, contributing in marked measure to the material development of the city. He also was prominently connected with public affairs, serving as mayor of St. Ansgar and as treasurer of the school board for many years. He was the first mayor of the village and as such did much to promote its interests by establishing policies and precedents which have since been followed. He is now living retired in the enjoyment of a well earned rest and all who know him entertain for him the highest respect.

R. C. Lubiens, whose name introduces this record, is indebted to the public school system of St. Ansgar for his educational training, while his early business experience came to him in his father's store, where he worked until 1891. He was then made manager of a private bank in St. Ansgar, which was the first bank of the town, and since that date has been closely connected with financial interests, being today manager of The Saint Ansgar Bank. He established a safe, conservative policy which has ever been followed.

He has been most careful in protecting the interests of depositors and at the same time has been ever ready to extend any possible courtesy to the patrons of the bank. He is a stockholder in many other projects which have benefited by his cooperation and by his endorsement.

On the 18th of September, 1889, Mr. Lubiens was united in marriage to Miss Alice Delaney, a native of Ohio, who was a successful school teacher prior to her marriage and a graduate of the Iowa State Normal. They have become parents of two children: Irma, who was born May 23, 1894, and is the wife of S. A. Kleinwort, of Mitchell county ; and Naomi, who was born March 18, 1897.

Mr. Lubiens is a Knight Templar Mason and a most loyal and faithful exemplar of the craft. His political allegiance is given to the republican party and he has taken an active interest in furthering public progress along political lines. He served for many years as treasurer of the schools, has been a member of the city council and is a charter member of the Commercial Club. He has assisted in organizing practically all of the public improvements of St. Ansgar and no man has been more deeply or helpfully interested in those things which have to do with the general welfare.
