Dorothy June Navratil

ST. ANSGAR — Dorothy June Navratil, 49, died Saturday (Dec. 5, 1998) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage, ending her courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton, with the Rev. Rose Marie Nack officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar.

Family will receive friends from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar.

Dorothy was born on April 3, 1949, in Osage, the daughter of Kenneth and Leona (Erdman) Horgen. She grew up in rural St. Ansgar, where she graduated from St. Ansgar Community High School.

She attended the Rochester School of Practical Nursing, Rochester, Minn., and earned her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

Dorothy was baptized a child of God, and confirmed her faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, where she married Jerry Dean Navratil on March 22, 1969.

They farmed near Grafton for many years and raised their three children. She joined the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton and maintained her membership there, even after moving to St. Ansgar several years ago.

Dorothy was a longtime employee of Hormel Food Inc., Austin, Minn., where she continued to work as long as she was able.

The companionship of her children, family and many friends was a source of great joy for Dorothy. Having grown up and lived most of her life on a farm, she loved being outdoors and found peace working the soil of her flower and vegetable gardens. She also enjoyed quilting and sewing, fashioning many hand-made gifts for her loved ones. Her strength and spirit will be sadly missed.

Dorothy is survived by her sons, Jon Navratil of Northwood, and Jeremy Navratil of St. Ansgar; her daughter, Jennifer Navratil of Iowa City; her mother, Leona Horgen of St. Ansgar; three sisters, Karen Jaspers and her husband, Keith, of Springfield, Mo., Janice Vervaecke and her husband, Edward, of St. Ansgar, Sheryln Horgen of St. Ansgar; three brothers, Russell Horgen and special friend, Janice Ask, of Grafton, Darwin Horgen and special friend, Julie Weide, of Grafton, and Keith Horgen and his wife, Jan, of St. Ansgar; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth; a sister, Norma; and her maternal and paternal grandparents.
