HORGEN, Leona (nee Erdman) 1915-2009

Leona Emelia (nee Erdman) Horgen, 94, died on June 3, at Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar, Iowa.

Leona Emelia Erdman, the only child of Otto and Elsie (Haupt) Erdman of rural St. Ansgar, was born on January 16, 1915. She was baptized by the Reverend Wm. Reinecks on February 12, 1915 at St. John’s Lutheran Church east of Grafton, and confirmed on April 1, 1928 by the Reverend Paul Brammer.

Leona and Kenneth Edwin Horgen of Osage were married Dec. 26, 1941, by the Reverend Paul Brammer in the church parsonage. They had eight children. Leona drew her strength from the love of family — her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her many friends. In her garden, among the flowers, Leona found peace and a sustaining faith that carried her through life with courage and grace.

She is survived by daughters, Karen (Keith) Jaspers, Springfield, Missouri, Janice (Edward) Vervaecke, St. Ansgar, Sherlyn Horgen, St. Ansgar and fiance David Klatt, Mason City; sons, Russell Horgen, Grafton, and friend Janice Ask, Northwood, Keith (Jan) Horgen, St. Ansgar; Darwin Horgen and friend Julie Wiede, Grafton, Minn.

Leona’s legacy lives through her 19 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. Each, in their own special way, brought her laughter and joy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; daughters Dorothy Navratil, Norma Horgen and her parents.

The Reverend Byron Northwick will preside over funeral services at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 6, at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with burial to follow in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, June 5, at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar. Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home of St. Ansgar, is in charge of arrangements.
