MAPLETON, IOWA - Joan Hoagland, 49, of Mapleton, Iowa, passed away at her home in the presence of her loving husband, daughters, and sisters on Saturday, April 18, 2009. She fought a courageous two-and-one-half year battle against breast cancer. In the end she left this world for a far more beautiful place.

There was a private family burial. This was followed by a service at 11 a.m. Tuesday officiated by Monsignor Mark Duchaine at the Maple Valley-Anthon Oto High School Gym in Mapleton. A memorial breakfast was held at 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. in the High School Commons.

Joan was a loving mother, wife, friend, and teacher. She was an inspiration to everyone she met. She faced her illness with a strength and humor, always concerned how others were doing.

Joan was born on Oct. 14, 1959, to Joseph and Colleen (Blandin) Kloberdanz in Osage, Iowa. She attended Ellsworth Community College and the University of Northern Iowa where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education.

Joan was married to David Hoagland on June 21, 1986, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. She was blessed with two wonderful daughters, Katie and Laura. Her girls were her pride and joy and her reason for living.

Joan began her teaching career as a kindergarten teacher in Manilla, Iowa. She went on to work at the Boys and Girls Home in Sioux City, then taught kindergarten in Danbury, Iowa, and also worked as a director at the Playmates Preschool in Onawa, Iowa. Joan worked for Maple Valley Elementary School as a third-grade teacher for the past nine years. During that time, she brought her wonderful sense of humor and her caring personality to her students and their families.

Joan enjoyed life to the fullest. She loved her annual summer trips to Okoboji with "the girls," going on boat rides and pretending to be young. She loved her shopping trips with her sisters and friends. There was nothing she enjoyed more than finding a bargain. She also enjoyed creating scrapbooks for her family to enjoy. Every time her family and friends see a dragonfly, they will think of Joan. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, Iowa.

Joan is survived by her husband, David Hoagland; her daughters, Katie and Laura of Mapleton, Iowa; her sister, Nancy Monroe, and her husband, Bob, of Odenton, Md., her brother, Brian Kloberdanz, and his wife, Susan, and their children, Abby, Drew, and Claire of St. Charles, Ill., her sister, Dianne Klinker, and her husband, Bill, and their sons, Thor, Knute, and Gunnar of Primghar, Iowa; her mother-in-law, Phyllis Franken of Odebolt; her brother-in-law, Gregg Hoagland, and his wife, Sherri, and their sons, Jonathan and Zachary of Carroll; and her brother-in-law, Barry Hoagland and his daughter, Brittany, of Ankeny.

Joan was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Kloberdanz; her mother, Colleen Kloberdanz; and her brother, Kevin Kloberdanz, from Osage.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Joan Hoagland Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Armstrong Funeral Home, Mapleton, 712-882-2566.
