ST. ANSGAR — Douglas A. Saaranen Jr., 59, of St. Ansgar died on Monday (Aug. 8, 2005) in St. Ansgar.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Carpenter, with the Rev. Lance Kittleson officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar.

Douglas A. Saaranen Jr.

ST. ANSGAR, IOWA — Douglas A. Saaranen Jr., 59, of St. Ansgar died on Monday (Aug. 8, 2005) in St. Ansgar.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Carpenter with the Rev. Lance Kittleson officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar.

Douglas Ardel Saaranen Jr. was born on July 14, 1946, in LaCrosse, Wis., to Douglas Sr. and Mildred (Hanson) Saaranen. He graduated from Austin High in 1964. He attended Winona State from 1964-1968 and played football.

After college, he worked for Hormel Foods Corp. for 21 years. After leaving Hormel, he worked part time for Nevada Bob's (also known as Golf Headquarters) in Rochester. At the time of his death, he worked for the St. Ansgar School District.

Douglas married Melody A. Olsen-Scheffel on June 30, 1984. Douglas enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards with his grandchildren, golfing with his friends, Thursday night outings with his buddies, and fishing up north.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, four uncles and two aunts.

Survivors include his wife, Melody; children, Mindee (Joe) Hemann and Scott Scheffel; grandchildren, Madison, Taylor, Sydney and Jacob Hemann; brothers, Frank (Nancy) Saaranen and Bob Saaranen; nephew, Scott (Nikka) Saaranen; nieces, Laura (Luis) Wasserman and Sarah Horne; brothers-in-law, Derby (Barb) Olsen, Derry (Debbie) Olsen and Marty (Deb) Olsen; and many relatives and friends.

Douglas was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be sadly missed by his family, many friends and the community of St. Ansgar.
