Stanley was born May 27, 1924, the son of Sever and Stella (Gordon) Knutson, at the family farm in Barton Township, Worth County, Iowa, where he lived his entire life. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith by the Rev. Olaf Langehough at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter. He received his public education at the Carpenter school.
