MARY JANE LEINENKUGEL
NEW HAVEN, IOWA — Mary Jane Leinenkugel, 83, of New Haven, was called home to the Lord on Saturday (June 5, 2004). She died at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.
Mary Jane was born Aug. 28, 1920, in Douglas Township, Mitchell County, the daughter of John C. and Vern (Kehoe) Fox. She was raised as a farm girl on the homestead just south of New Haven. Mary Jane graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in New Haven. She attended Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids and nursing training at St. Luke’s in Sioux City, before graduating from nursing training in Mason City. Mary Jane served as a nurse in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mary Jane was united in marriage to Norman “Bud” Leinenkugel on Nov. 25, 1948, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven. Their marriage was blessed with eight children. She was a long time member of the Altar Society of St. Peter’s Church. She taught religious education for many years and was involved with mission activities. She was active in Bible study.
Mary Jane served in several capacities of the A.C.C.W. She was also a member of the American Legion, the Legion Auxiliary and the Association of Retarded Citizens. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, and wonderful friend. Over the years, she shared with family and friends her deep faith, along with her many talents. Mary Jane was a great cook, the family historian, a gardener, and a nature lover.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven, with the Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating. Interment will be in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in New Haven, with a flag presentation by Osage American Legion Post 278.
Visitation will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, 702 State St. in Osage, where there will be a rosary at 6 p.m. and Scripture Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church on Tuesday.
Mary Jane is survived by her husband, Norman “Bud” Leinenkugel, of New Haven; children, Joseph Leinenkugel, of Des Moines, Mary Anne Leinenkugel, of Osage, John Leinenkugel (Kathy), of Omaha, Neb. and son, John Charles Lubbers, of San Diego, Calif., Therese Rolfes (Tim), of Johnston, and children, Rachel and Grant Rolfes, Rose Hagemann (Tom), of Ankeny, and children David and Annie Hagemann, Paul Leinenkugel (Cindi), of Hemet, Calif., and children, Amber, Lindsey and Garret Darnell, and James Leinenkugel, of Des Moines; brothers, Robert Fox (Virginia), of Neosho, Mo., and Ivo Fox (Karen), of New Haven; a sister, Rose Ann O’Neill (Robert), of Waterloo; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Thomas Leinenkugel on Aug. 18, 1976; and her brother, Kenneth Fox.
