STACYVILLE, IOWA — Alvina J. Brown, 89, died Wednesday (May 5, 2004) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home in Stacyville, following a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with the Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with a rosary at 4 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Family and friends may gather from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service Saturday at the church.

Alvina was born on April 20, 1915, in Randolph, Nebraska, to James and Anna (Gubbels) Reding. As a young girl of four, she moved with her family to a farm south of Stacyville. She attended Visitation School in Stacyville and graduated in 1933.

On Nov. 23, 1937, she was united in marriage to Adrian B. Brown of Stacyville in a double wedding ceremony with her twin sister. They lived on a farm southeast of Stacyville where she became a full-time partner in agriculture: milking, raising hogs and operating a 7,000 chicken laying barn. Along with Adrian, she was active in the North Iowa Poultry Association.

Alvina enjoyed dancing, playing cards, bowling, quilting, growing flowers, leading 4-H groups and playing golf. She excelled at all, especially golf, where she managed to do what most golfers dream of and got a hole-in-one, not once, but twice.

Alvina’s faith was important to her. She was a member of the A.C.C.W. (Christian Mothers), Lady Foresters and her parish circle.

To cherish her memory are her children, Robert (Christina) Brown, of Glendora, Calif., Mary (John) Blong, of Bettendorf, Edward (Deborah) Brown, of Cedar Rapids, and Joseph (Sally) Brown, of Stacyville; grandchildren, Thomas (Debby) Brown, Jeff (Sherry) Brown, Tony Brown, Jack (Theresa) Blong, Laura (Rick) Burkamper, Jennifer (Rich) DeLillo, Sarah Brown, Stephanie (John) Gerbig, Amy (Joshua) Katcher, Timothy (Patricia) Brown, and James Brown; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by two sisters, Mary Pitzen, of Stacyville, and Anna Kramer, of Osage; and one brother, Melvin Reding, of Stacyville, along with many nephews and nieces.

Alvina was preceded in death by her husband, Adrian; her parents; and a brother, Joseph.

Memorials may be directed to American Parkinson’s Disease Association, or Hospice of North Iowa in care of the family.

Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar is in charge of arrangements -- (641) 713-4920.
