NORA SPRINGS, IOWA — Marie A. Crowell-Aarons, 86, of Summit Heights Assisted Living, Nora Springs, formerly of Mason City, died early Saturday morning (April 17, 2004) at Nora Springs Health Care Center in Nora Springs.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 5th St. S.E. in Mason City with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Inurnment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St. S.E. in Mason City. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may direct them to Hospice of North Iowa.

Marie Angela Crowell-Aarons was born June 30, 1917, in Stacyville, Mitchell county, Iowa, to George F. and Elizabeth (Nuebel) Gerk. After the birth of Marie, the family moved to Hillsboro, N.D. In 1930, at the age of 13, Marie and the family moved back to Clear Lake, where she attended and graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1935.

On March 5, 1940, Marie was united in marriage to Clarence D. Crowell. Marie became a busy homemaker. Marie and Clarence became the proud parents of five children, Larry, Robert, Richard, Gay and Bradley. Marie enjoyed the tender and special moments of being a devoted, loving and nurturing wife and mother to her husband and children. Marie’s husband, Clarence died on October 29, 1961. Several years went by, and then Marie met and married Roy F. Aarons on February 17, 1973. Roy died April 3, 1989.

Paramount to Marie was her devotion of her faith at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City of which she was a lifelong member and active participant throughout her life. She was a passionate volunteer of both the American Red Cross (she was also a member of the first American Red Cross Disaster Team) and Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Mason City.

Marie was a devoted wife, nurturing mother and grandmother. Her family was extremely important to her.

Some of Marie’s favorite leisure activities and interests included being an avid gardener and reading.

Marie will be missed dearly by all who have shared in her life.

Those grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in her life are her children, Larry W. (Betty A.) Crowell of Littleton, Colo., Robert G. (Linda L.) Crowell, Richard J. (Beverly J.) Crowell, Gay L. (Stephen R.) Jensen, all of Mason City, and Bradley J. (Karla M.) Crowell of Littleton, Colo.; eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; three step-children, William Aarons of Morganton, N.C.; Andy Aarons of Asheville, N.C. and Annette Aarons of Clear Lake; three step-grandchildren; four brothers, Charles Gerk of Clear Lake, Arthur Gerk of Mason City, Donald Gerk of Mankato, Minn., and Bill Gerk of Tucson, Ariz.

Preceding Marie in death are her husbands, Clarence D. Crowell and Roy F. Aarons; her siblings, Paul, Peg, Joe, George, Ken and Mildred; and her parents.
