ST. ANSGAR, IOWA — Vernon Lee Murphy, 86, of St. Ansgar, died Friday (Jan. 30, 2004) at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Lyle, Minn., with the Rev. Barbara Finley-Shea officiating. Burial will be in the First Lutheran Cemetery in St. Ansgar. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, 207 S. School St. in St. Ansgar.
Vernon Lee Murphy was born to John and Lulu (Gregg) Murphy on Sept. 2, 1917. He was the third son of four sons.
Vernon married Margaret Henrietta Tesch on May 18, 1941, in Albert Lea, Minn. They had five children.
Vernon was a disabled American veteran having served in World War II until being wounded in France and sent back to England, and then to a hospital in Chicago, Ill. He was a 60-year member of the American Legion in Lyle, and a long time member of the Lyle Lions Club. He was a truck driver his entire life, and lived in Lyle, Minn., Mason City, and retired to St. Ansgar.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, on Oct. 29, 1994; his father and mother; step-mother and step-father; two brothers, Chet and Marion; six brothers-in-law, and five sisters-in-law.
Vernon is survived by his five children, Reuben (Ann) Murphy, of Lyle, Minn., Derald (Roxie) Murphy, of Chandler, Ariz., Carolyn (Bruce) Coleman, of Kettle River, Minn., Nyla (Larry) Hansen, of St. Ansgar, and Dean Murphy, of Union, Mo.; ten grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and many step-grandchildren and step-great- grandchildren; one brother, Richard (Mildred) Murphy, of Austin, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Elsie Decklever, of Osage, and Tillie Olson, of Horseshoe Bend, Ark.; brothers-in-law, Otto Tesch, of St. Ansgar, and Rudy (Arlene) Tesch, of St. Ansgar; and many nephews and nieces.
