Lena H. Bunge, age 97, of Osage, died on Monday, April 2, 2001, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage, Mitchell county, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, April 7, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with visitation from 6-8:00 p.m., on Friday evening, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Lena was born on January 12, 1904, to John Helzer and Mary Trout in Cairo, Nebraska, the eighth of ten children. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended school in Grand Island, Nebraska.

Lena was employed in retailing in Lincoln, Nebraska, when she married Harry Bunge on July 5, 1927 in Delmont, South Dakota. The couple moved to Auburn, Nebraska in 1934 and worked together in a hardware store they opened. They moved back to Lincoln in 1954 and the couple retired in Osage in 1967. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1977.

Lena was in local Lutheran church activities wherever she lived. In Osage, she enjoyed working in auxiliary organizations for the Mitchell County Memorial Hospital and the Faith Lutheran Home.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Harry in 1981; her parents; and eight brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her son, Paul and wife, Gloria recently retired to Ft. Myers, Florida; sister, Frieda of Merced, California; four grandchildren, Nadine DeVoss of Council Bluffs, Martin of Forest City, Martha Zenor of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and John of Waterloo; and nine great-grandchildren.

OSAGE, IOWA - Lena Bunge, 97, of Osage, died Monday (April 2, 2001) of natural causes at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, where she had lived for several years.

Lena was born Jan. 12, 1904, to John and Mary (Trout) Helzer in Cairo, Neb. the eighth of 10 children. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended school in Grand Island, Neb.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Lena is survived by her son, Paul Bunge and his wife, Gloria, recently retired to Fort Myers, Fla.; a sister, Frieda, of Merced, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Nadine DeVoss, of Council Bluffs, Martin Bunge, of Forest City, Martha Zenor, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and John Bunge, of Waterloo; and nine great-grandchildren.
