Everett was born on June 28, 1938, the son of Norbert and Theresa (Wettstein) Hughes. He was baptized and confirmed at the St. Mel’s Catholic Church in McIntire and graduated from the McIntire High School.

In 1959, he was united in marriage to JoAnn Francis at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in LeRoy, Minnesota and they set up farming in the McIntire area.
