Florence Farrell, age 87, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Osage.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 24, at the Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar. Interment was in the Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines.
Florence Ann Farrell, was born on April 25, 1913 in Shelby, Iowa, to Joseph and Pearl (Savage) Scott. Florence attended the Roosevelt High School in Des Moines. After graduation in 1931 she went on to the American Institute of Business, majoring in accounting.
In 1941, Florence was married to Melvin Maples in Glendale, California. Together they had one daughter, JoAnn (Joni). In 1954, Florence and JoAnn moved back to Des Moines where Florence was employed by the Valley Bank for 15 years working in the savings and loan department, where she worked until her retirement in 1975.
On March 9, 1973, Florence was united in marriage to John (Jerry) Farrell in Des Moines. Jerry passed away in September of 1982. Florence moved to St. Ansgar in the spring of 1989 and moved to the Worth Living Center in 1994 where she lived until her death.
She was a faithful member of the Central Presbyterian Church in Des Moines. She was also a member of the Daughters of Elks, a committee member of the Democratic National Party, the Agency on Aging and was a volunteer at the governor’s mansion, Terrace Hill, and active with the St. Ansgar Senior Saints, serving as President.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Jerry; one brother, Dr. A. Mack Scott; and two sisters, Mary Jo Glover and Virginia Gambrill.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, JoAnn (Joni) Schmidt and her husband, David of St. Ansgar; four grandchildren, Emily (Schmidt) Edwards and her husband, Alex of Lincoln, Nebraska, Julie Schmidt of St. Ansgar, Amanda Schmidt of Carpenter and Jonathan Schmidt of St. Ansgar; one great-grandchild, Alexander Schmidt of St. Ansgar; one niece, Cheryl (Scott) Hill and her husband, Curt of Long Beach, California; and one nephew, Randy Scott of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
