George Oakland Funeral February 1

Funeral services for George Milton Oakland, 74, of rural St. Ansgar, who died on Friday, February 8, 2002, were held Tuesday, February 12 at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, with the Rev. Kathy Larson officiating.

George was born on May 29, 1927 in Twin Lakes, Freeborn County, Minnesota to Inga (Thompson) and Jacob Oakland. He was baptized on June 26, 1927 at Lunder Lutheran Church, Glenville, Minnesota. He was confirmed on September 13, 1942 at Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church, Gordonsville, Minnesota.

George grew up as the seventh of ten children, Lawrence (Doaks), Eleanor, Ingebor, Norman, Walter (Wally), Kenneth, Elaine (Sis), Idella (Babe), and Robert (Bobby). They lived on farms in the Gordonsville area. He received his 8th grade diploma on June 27, 1941 from school district #59 in Freeborn County, Minnesota. He worked for several farmers in the area, worked at a creamery at Myrtle, Minnesota, and worked on a turkey farm near Otranto.

George married Marvyl Louise Hulshizer on August 7, 1949 at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter. He resided on the same farm north of Carpenter all of his married life. George and Marvyl raised two children, Judy and Gary.

George was a member of Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter. He served many years on the church council and the cemetery board. He was active in the Carpenter Community Club and on the board of directors of the Northwood Retirement Home in Northwood.

George has been a farmer all his life, milked cows for many years, raised crops, cattle, pigs and sheep. Enjoyed being a seed corn dealer for many years, which led to many lifelong, special friendships.

His lifelong interests were checking his crops, going to auction sales, attending reunions and community dances, pitching horseshoes, camping and fishing. George loved his four grandchildren, Jacob, Joshua, Sadie and Jenna. He loved having a grandchild sitting in his lap, giving them rides in his tractor and combine. He attended their baseball, softball, soccer, football and basketball games, also dance and music concerts. George enjoyed John Deere tractors all his life.

George is survived by his wife Marvyl, St. Ansgar; daughter Judy Shirley of Hudson, Iowa, son Gary Oakland and daughter-in-law Julie of St. Ansgar; four grandchildren, Jacob and Sadie Oakland of St. Ansgar; Joshua and Jenna Shirley of Hudson; mother-in-law Gladys Hulshizer of Northwood; four sisters, Eleanor Buchanan of Gordonsville; Ingebor Broitzman of Northwood; Elaine Hill and husband Jim of Northwood; Idella Hinds of Albert Lea, Minnesota; two brothers, Norman Oakland of Albert Lea and Robert Oakland and wife Donna of Albert Lea; two sisters-in-law, Delores Oakland of Albert Lea and Carol Oakland of Gordonsville; brother-in-law Marvin Hulshizer and wife Sandy of Georgetown, Texas; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Inga, his father, Jacob, brothers Walter, Lawrence and Kenneth Oakland.

Burial was in the Deer Creek Cemetery.
