OSAGE, IOWA — Velva Smolik, 80, of Osage, died Thursday (January 1, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with the Rev. Arthur Hill, officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Hospice of North Iowa.
Velva was born March 9, 1917, at Little Cedar, the daughter of Ray and Ferne (Neville) Wright. She attended Little Cedar schools and graduated from Little Cedar High School in 1935, where she participated in basketball and softball. She later played basketball for the Little Cedar town team.
She married Ernest Smolik May 1, 1937, at the Little Brown Church. They made their home in the Osage and Orchard areas.
Velva enjoyed her grandchildren and her flower gardens. She was a member of Eastern Star for many years.
She is survived by her husband, Ernest, of Osage; one son, Gary Smolik and his wife, Margaret, of Orchard; four grandchildren, Sister Katherine Smolik, OSB, of St. Louis, Mo., Frank Smolik and his wife, Becky, of Mason City, Mark Smolik, of El Paso, Texas, and Michael Smolik and his wife, Jennifer, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Verla Young and her husband, Ernest, of Des Moines, Wash., and Zella Meyer and husband, Mark, of Monrovia, Calif.; and two brothers, George Wright and his wife, Selma, of Glendale, Ariz., and Kenneth Wright of Tucson, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Cleone; and two brothers, Harold and Irwin "Ray."
