Death of E. G. Rice

Mr. E. G. Rice died at his apartment in the Lawn House, Wednesday morning at two o'clock. At eight o'clock on the previous morning, he was found in bed in an unconsious condition.

A physician was called, and it was ascertained that he was under the infulence of laudanum, a half-empty vial of which was found on the table in his room. Vigorous treatment was immediately applied and about noon he regained consciousness to recognize his wife and daughters, but he sank into an unconscious condition again, and died at
two o'clock yesterday morning. The laudanum found in his room was purchased by him several days ago, for the purpose of assisting him to sleep, he said; and he had been using it for some time, at last with fatal effects.

Mr. Rice was born in Clarksville, New York, in 1826; was married at South Valley, Otsego, New York, in 1856, and moved to Osage in 1858.

Since that he has been located at St. Ansgar as a school teacher for three years at East Mitchell; and at West Mitchell in the hardware business returning to Osage in 1870.

He leaves a wife and two daughters, Miss Stella, and Mrs. P. V. M. Raymond, of Lincoln, Nebraska, all of whom were present at time of death. The funeral will take place today at 3 o'clock. Rev. Pope of the Baptist church officiating.
