NEW HAMPTON, IOWA — Russell Dean Cowell, 59, died Thursday, July 8, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, with Rev. Jay Amundson officiating. Burial will be at the St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Russell was born on June 20, 1945, near St. Ansgar, the son of Vern and Pernnie (Jones) Cowell. He graduated from St. Ansgar High School and barber college in Waterloo. He was a lifelong restaurant manager in Iowa City, Keokuk, Waterloo, Manchester and New Hampton. He was also a former Chamber of Commerce member in New Hampton.

Russell married Diane Detert on Dec. 30, 1967, in Tiffin, Iowa, and celebrated 36 years of marriage. He loved fishing, genealogy, the Civil War and large dogs. His greatest love was his family.

Russell is survived by his wife, Diane, of New Hampton; son, Mark Lee Cowell of Des Moines; daughter, Justine Gerber of New Hampton; three grandchildren, Nicole Gerber, Sarah Gerber and Hunter Gerber; three brothers, Lee (Margaret) Cowell of St. Ansgar, Donald (Mickie) Cowell of Hawaii, Allen (Jean) of Charles City; three sisters, Iva Bruesewitz of St. Ansgar, Betty (Dale) VanHorn of Fort Collins, Colo., Karen (Larry) Crilly of Austin, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and one sister.
