Mrs. Annie Volbrecht

Mrs. Annie Volbrecht was born in Racine, Wisconsin, February 14, 1860, the daughter of Edward and Eda Niel, and passed away in the hospital at Riceville on October 19, 1942, at the age of 82 years, 8 months and 5 days, following a succession of severe heart attacks.

As a little girl Mrs. Volbrecht came to Howard county, Iowa, where she grew up in the home of her grandparents, the Fred Lebows.

On January 7, 1880, she became the bride of Wm. C. Volbrecht. This union was blessed with twelve children of whom Mary died in infancy.

For 32 years the Volbrecht homestead, six miles south of Riceville, was their home. In 1913 they retired to their home on the south edge of Riceville. In 1940 they were privileged to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. Last year, on October 14, her husband was called by death, since which time Mrs. Volbrecht has made her home with Mrs. Orphie Funte of Riceville.

We like to remember her as a dispenser of Christian sunshine. She lived her Christianity. One of her last requests characterizes her best: "Don't say much about me at my funeral, but give all the glory to God." I am a sinner but God had made a saint out of this sinner."

Born and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, she by the grace of God remained loyal in her Savior, Jesus Christ, unto the end and is now, according to His promise at home with Him forever. With her departs the oldest of the "old-timers" of our congregation.

October 22 he bedded her beside her husband in God's Acres, of St. Peter's Lutheran church.
Her pastor, the Rev. Walter Leckband, spoke words of comfort to the mourners on the basis of Ps. 90; 5, 6, 12. Two duet numbers, "Jesus, Savior Pilot Me" and "Come,Ye Disconsolate," were sung by Mrs. Edw. Scheer and Mrs. Edw. Kruger.

The following served as pallbearers: Ben Kruger, Ed Rieken, C.F. Lubbart, Ansgar Christensen, Edw. Kruger and Chas. Kapka.

The passing of a wonderful mother is mourned by the children: Herman, Charlie, and Mrs. H. F. Merrel, Lodi, Calif.; Jack of Sacramento, Calif., Robert, Fresno, Calif., Mrs. W. Burns and Mrs. R. L. Tanburg, Stockton, Calif.; Mrs. John Myer of Glasgow, Mont.; Mrs. Charlie Brockney, Mrs. Gene Gooder, and Mrs. J. Kruger, of Riceville, Iowa, and 26 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
