Aged Woman Killed
By Train SaturdayMrs Martha Horgen, Mother
of Gilbert Horgen Struck
By Evening Clipper.Mrs. Martha Gullickson Horgen, the mother of Gilbert Horgen, was the victim of a tragic accident last Saturday evening. She was struck and killed by the evening Clipper as it came in from the south at about 7:30 o'clock.
The aged lady had been to visit her granddaughter, Mrs. Emil Lincke, but had returned from there, Mr. Lincke having accompanied her home and seen her safely into her house. Then Mrs. Ellen Christianson-Halvorson came along with her baby, and Mrs. Horgen asked if she might wheel the cab a little ways. She did so, accompanying Mrs. Halvorson home. Then she started back alone.
The trainmen say she was not on the track when they saw her and whistled. She seemed to think she could get across. On the track, however she stopped, either confused or helpless with fright, and the pilot of the engine struck her, throwing her into the ditch. She was probably killed instantly as her head was crushed in, and almost every bone on one side of her body broken.
At a coroner's inquest the railroad company was absolved from blame. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Horgen home at 1:30 o'clock and at the church at 2 o'clock.
Mrs. Horgen was 85 years of age. She has made her home with her son, Gilbert, in the southern part of town since her husband's death many years ago.
