SARAH J. MILLER

Born November 8, 1838
Died November 3, 1912

Sarah J. Miller was born at Van Wert, Ohio, November 8, 1838 and came to Iowa in 1852 with her parents, who settled in Mitchell county and gave to the community which grew up around them the name of Orchard. At the age of sixteen she was united in marriage to Newton Seward. From this union two daughters were born, Pearl E., and Nettie.

Pearl E., the eldest, became the wife of William R. Flint of Orchard in 1884, and died six years later, leaving a small son, LeGrand Flint. four years of age to mourn her loss.

Nettie married George H. Barker in 1883, and he died two years later.

In the fall of 1873 Mrs. Seward became the wife of William M. Miller. This union continued until the death of Mr. Miller on Jan. 14, 1899.

Mrs. Miller leaves to grieve her loss LeGrand Flint of Seattle, Wash.; one sister, Mrs. John Lindsay of Floyd, Ia., and two brothers, Elithu Orchard of Orchard, Ia., and Thos. Orchard of Logan, Kan., besides other relatives and friends, who appreciated her many good qualities and prized her companionship.

Mrs Miller united with the First Congregational church of Osage on March 6, 1892, by letter from the Orchard church. She was an active and helpful member among us and always ready to lend a helping hand.

She will be greatly missed in her church home. She was also an active member both of the Eastern Star and Women's Relief Corps. and in both these circles the vacant chair will be conspicuous indeed.

Mrs. Miller passed away at her home Sunday morning, November 3, 1912, after an illness of only one hour. The services were held from the home 1108 East Main Street, Friday morning, November 8, 1912, at ten o'clock, her pastor, Rev. H. Allen officiating. . . .

A long line of carriages followed the remains to their last resting place in the Osage cemetery, beside the daughters who had gone before. . . .
