SHANKS

Christopher C. Shanks was born in Green county, Pennsylvania, in August 1831, and died in Osage, Iowa, December 15, 1904. He had thus passed the allotted "three score years and ten". His boyhood was spent in his native state of Pennsylvania. After growing to manhood's estate he moved west and settled at Rockford, Illinois, and it was from this place that he enlisted in the army at the breaking out of the war in 1861.

After the war he came to Iowa and after a short residence here went to Kansas where he spent a few years returning to this state some twenty-five years ago and this has since been home.

Two brothers, two daughters and a granddaughter are left to mourn his loss. The brothers are Jacob of Pen Run, Penn., and Joseph of Coopertown Penn, the daughters live at Maywood, Illinois, and the granddaughter at Milton, Oregon.

Mr. Shank enlisted as a volunteer in the army at Rockford, Illinois, on July 30, 1861, in Co.D, 2d Regiment, Illinois, Infantry. In July, 1864, he was discharged at Springfield, Illinois, on account of the expiration of his enlistment. He re-inlisted in Co.E. 45th Regiment-Illinois Veteran Volunteers and served until June,1865.

His comrades in the Grand Army of the Republic speak of him as being one of the most faithful men in the order. His faithfulness in the G.A.R. is only indicative of his faithfulness in general service during his years as a soldier fighting for his country.

The funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Bina Kline last Saturday conducted by Dr. Clark and the remains were interred in the Osage Cemetery beside those of a daughter.
