[Mitchell County Press -- Nov. 7, 1912]

Born October 19, 1826
Died October 31, 1912

Mary Smith was born in Topsham Vermont on October 19, 1826 and passed away at the home of her niece, Mrs. B. S. Woodard, in Lincoln township on October 31, 1912, aged 86 years and 12 days.

When a young girl she gave her heart to God and united with the Methodist Episcopal church in West Topsham, Vt. and so far as is known kept her membership in that church.

In 1886 she moved from Vermont to Sparta, Wis., with Mr. Davis and family, a cousin with whom she lived for twelve years. Thirty-four years ago she came to Iowa to make her home with Mrs. Woodward. While she has returned to Wisconsin and sometimes to her native state for extended visits, yet this has been her home, where she has lived a quiet, helpful life, never complaining, not wishing to be any trouble to anyone and ready and wanting to go.

For several years Mrs. Smith has not felt able to attend church, yet she was always interested in its work and especially the missionary society.

The form of Aunt Mary, as she was called we shall see no more, but her gentle spirit and infulence will remain. Our loss is her gain. She is the last of seven children to depart this life. The funeral was held on Saturday, November 2nd conducted by her pastor, Rev. Mack.

Interment was in the family lot in the Osage Cemetery.
