Herbert Norby, age 98, of Osage, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, 3269 Foothill Avenue, rural Osage, with the Rev. R. Dawson Tornes officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Creek Cemetery. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and will continue one hour before services at the church.

Herbert was born January 28, 1910, near Osage, in Mitchell County, the son of Carl and Ida (Olsen) Norby.

He attended rural and Osage schools. Herbert married Alice Moe on September 6, 1933, at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church in Meroa. They made their home on the family farm in rural Osage. He was a life long and

active member of Rock Creek Lutheran Church. Herbert was an original board member of Faith Lutheran Home. He enjoyed bowling, playing pool and walking.

Herbert is survived by two daughters, Joan (Frank) Jacobs of Osage, Marlys (Will) Smith of Germantown, Tennessee; two sons, Marvin (Edna) Norby of Osage, Dean (Jane) Norby of Osage; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded death by his parents; his wife, Alice Norby (in 2004); 1 sister, Rosella Klemesrud; 2 brothers, Kenneth Norby and Loren Norby.

Herbert Lawrence Norby was born January 28, 1910 on a farm at Rock, Mitchell, Iowa to Carl Halsteinsen Norby and Ida Bertina Olsen, the second of their five children.

Herbert was baptized on March 8, 1910 at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church at Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa. His baptismal sponsors were: Mr. & Mrs. Sam Ellingson; Clara Norby and Lawrence Olsen.
He was confirmed at RCLC on May 25, 1924.

Found in the 1910 census at Rock, Mitchell, Iowa: Carl 35, Ida 26, Rosella T, 2, Herbert L. 9 mos.; Lawrence Adolph Olsen age 17.

Found in the 1920 - 1930 censuses at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa:
1920: Carl Norby 45, Ida B Norby 36, Rosella T Norby 12, Herbert L Norby 9,Kenneth I Norby 4 yrs 3 mos.

1925: Carl Norby 50, Ida B Norby 41, Rossella T Norby 17, Herbert L Norby 14, Kenneth I Norby 9, Lorey H Norby 4.

1930: Carl Norby 55, Ida B Norby 46, Herbert L Norby 20, Kenneth I Norby 15, Loren H Norby 10.

Herbert married Alice Olga Theresa Moe on September 6, 1933 at Rock Creek Lutheran, Meroa, Iowa.

The couple had four children:

Marvin James (b September 8, 1934 Osage, Mitchell, Iowa, d May 19, 2013 Osage, Iowa);
Joan Marie (b January 9, 1937 Osage, Iowa, d May 15, 2013 Osage, Iowa; Dean Alan and Marlys Jane (both still living in 2015).

Found in the 1940 census living on a farm at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa: Herbert L Norby 30, Alice O S Norby 30, Marvin J Norby 5, Joan Marie Norby 3, Dean Alan Norby 5 mos.

In 1931, Herbert and Alice bought a 140 acre farm located north and west of Meroa from the John Olsen Estate. They raised their children there and sold the farm to their son, Dean, in 1976. In 1946, they bought Herbert's father's farm from Carl Norby. Many people lived and farmed here over the years. Alice and Herbert moved to assisted living at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Herbert died February 12, 2008 at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa, 98 years old. He was buried at Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Meroa, Iowa.
