Mrs. Joseph Jacobs
Mary Jane Miller was born in Ohio May 7, 1838, the daughter of Lewis and Mary Ann Miller. When six years of age she moved with her parents to Lockport township, near Three Rivers, Mich. At the age of 14 her mother died, leaving her the care of her younger brother, who continued to live with her for some years after her marriage.
On October 4, 1860, she was united in marriage with Joseph Jacobs. To them three sons were born, two of whom, Frank and Charles B., of Burr Oak, live to mourn the death of a good mother. The other son, James Eugene died in infancy.
In July 1871, Mrs. Jacobs with her husband moved to Osage, Iowa, where they continued to reside until the spring of 1877, at which time they moved to Burr Oak, where they made their home for a period of twenty years. In 1897 they returned to Osage where Mr. Jacobs passed away January 31, 1902.
Mrs Jacobs was physically strong and well and was always a hard worker. She kept house from the time she was 14 years of age until Christmas of the past year. On April 12, 1914, she united with the Univeralist church of Osage, and was a useful and helpful member of the body. During her residence in Osage she was a lady loved and respected by her many friends and her passing brings great sorrow to the community.
In addition to her two sons Mrs. Jacobs is survived by two brothers, Lewis Morris Miller of Cailion, Ohio, and James B. Miller, of Kent, Ohio, also two grandchildren, J. Dean and Vera Jacobs of Burr Oak, and a number of other relatives and friends.
She passed away Friday, June 16, 1922.
Funeral services were conducted at the home of her son Frank, at 2 o'clock, by Rev. W.T. Smith, and interment was made in the Osage cemetery.
The Rev. Mrs. Hitchcock, former pastor of the Universalist church, was also present and paid Mrs. Jacobs a splendid tribute as a mother and fine type of Christian woman.
