Peter Johanns

Peter Johanns passed away last Wednesday morning at his home a mile south of New Haven. Mr. Johanns was 87 years old and had been very feeble for several years. He has since quitting active life, made his home with his daughter, Mrs. John Green.

Mr. Johanns farmed near New Haven for forty-four years, and was one of the most substantial and influential farmers in that vicinity in his prime.

He is known by nearly everyone in the county.
Funeral services were held from the Catholic church at New Haven on Friday morning at 9 o'clock and he was buried beside relatives in the cemetery at that place.

Peter Johanns was born in Germany, Oct. 15, 1834 and died June 14, 1922, at the age of 87 years, and 8 months.

He came to America when he was 19 years old and settled in Illinois, where he was united in marriage to Miss Catherine Smidth, in the year of 1858, to which union were born eleven children, Elizabeth, Peter, Mrs. John Green, Mrs. Frank Wagner, Mary Jane, Charles, John, Mrs. John Marr, Ben, Mike and Mrs. Clara Weinberger.

In 1871 he came to Mitchell county, Iowa, where he settled on a farm three miles west of New Haven. There he made many friends, who have stayed by him until his death. He has been loved and respected by all who knew him. When he was almost beyond speech he told his people, " I love everyone." Holding his crucifix he said "I have nothing more to say, take me, Lord, as I am."

His wife preceded him in death dying Jan. 2, 1904. Three children also preceded him in death, Elizabeth, Mary Jane and Peter.

Mr. Johanns died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Green, where he had made his home since 1914. Those attending the funeral from away were Mike Johanns, of Prairie View, Ill.; Mrs. Clara Weinberger, of Pine City, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs Charlie Johanns and family of Spring Valley, Minn.; Mrs Mary Johanns, of Grand Meadow, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. John Marr and family of Riceville; Mr. and Mrs. Supple, of Easton, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Rath of Mankato, Minn.
The pall bearers were six of the grandsons, Milo Johanns, of Grand Meadow, Minn.; Leon Johanns, of Spring Valley, Minn.; Paul and Avery Marr, of Riceville; Clem Johanns and Charlie Green of this place.

Mr. Johanns leaves to mourn his loss eight children and forty-four grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren, also a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at the Catholic church and he was laid to rest in the New Haven cemetery.
