Vernon Shatek, age 87, of Austin, Minnesota, died Sunday, March 4, 2007, at Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar, Iowa.

He was born Feb. 18, 1920, to Henry and Bessie (Schoolcraft) Shatek in Fort Worth, Texas. He moved to Austin in 1939, and married Marie Hanson in 1942 in Albert Lea. After serving as a head mechanic in the Army Air Corps during World War II, Vern became an employee of Hormel Foods, where he worked for 42 years. Marie died in 1979. The was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, VFW and American Legion.

Survivors include five sons: Robert, Richard (Linda), Ronald (Patty), all of Austin; Charles (Judy), of Hastings, Minnesota; Mark, of Albert Lea, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary (Walter) Callahan, of Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marie; a sister, Jenny; and brothers: William, Chester, Douglas and Jerry.

Memorial services were held on Thursday, March 8, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Rev. Ron Barnett officiating.

Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery, in Austin, with military honors by American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216.

The Worlein Funeral Home in Austin, Minnesota, was in charge of arrangements.
