OBITUARY

E. R. Markham

Edwin R. Markham was born at Laseby, Lincolnshire, England, May 30, 1842. When he was thirteen years old he came to the United States with his parents and settled in Racine county, Wisconsin, where he resided about twelve years. After that he lived at Caledonia, Minnesota, for a short time, and then moved to Brownville, Iowa, and resided there for twelve or fourteen years. From Brownville he came to Riceville, and has made that his home since that time.

July 3rd, 1868, he was united in marriage to Harriet R. Smith, in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, and to this union was born one child, Frank W. Markham, who will be forty years old tomorrow, October 12th. This couple have walked along the pathway of life hand in hand for forty-two years.

Mr. Markham's eldest brother, Thompson R. Markham, died October 7, 1909, thus prededing Edwin R. Markham one year and one day.

Two sisters also have preceded him, Sarah Ann McRole and Mrs. Counsell.

There remain to mourn him two brothers and two sisters, his wife and son, William Markham, of Osage, and Walter Markham of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, Mrs. Marla Howard of Pipestone, Minnesota, and Mrs. G. Gilbert of Osage, Iowa, Mrs. Edwin R. Markham and Frank of Riceville.

Brother Markham was a good neighbor and a true friend. Always a quiet man he was yet a good citizen and enterprising. He attended well his own concerns and when convinced of right was true to that conviction.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church for many years. For the last few months of his life he was a faithful attendant of the Methodist church as he was unable to walk far enough to attend his own.

Again our little circle is broken. Another chair is vacant. One more loved one has gone to be there on that beautiful shore to welcome us there.

We shall miss him but we shall remember that He who leads us and leadeth him knoweth best, "His will be done."

The services were conducted by Rev. F. L. Burns of the Free Methodist church assisted by Rev. P.P. Pease, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church.
