Merlin Dale Fossey, 70, of Austin died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Austin Medical Center.

He was born March 8, 1932, in Lyle, to Alfred and Amanda (Nelson) Fossey.

He attended St. Ansgar, Iowa schools, graduating in 1950. He then joined the Army in April 17, 1952, serving in the Korean Conflict as a medic and was honorably discharged as a sergeant on March 3, 1954.

On December 17, 1955, he married Alice Foster in Grand Meadow. They lived in Austin, and Merlin worked 25 years as a mechanic for Thill Implement in Rose Creek, at Gerard School for eight years and at Comforcare Good Samaritan Center for seven years in maintenance.

He belonged to Holy Cross Lutheran Church and VFW Post 1216 and American Legion Post 91. He enjoyed woodworking, camping and fishing.

Survivors include wife, Alice Fossey, Austin; children, Pamela (Steve) Forshier, Fountain Hills, Ariz.; Duane Fossey, Owatonna; Nancy (Terry Kropp) Fossey, Cave Creek, Ariz.; Dale Fossey, Harrison, Ark.; one granddaughter; brother, Darwin (Betty) Fossey, St. Ansgar, Iowa; sister-in-law, Phyllis (Frank) Dunlevy, Mason City, Iowa; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Wayne Fossey.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at the funeral home and at the church for one hour before the service. Service: 1:30 p.m., Thursday, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert Stohlmann officiating.

Interment: Grandview Cemetery with military rites by VFW Post 1216 and American Legion Post 91. Funeral Home: Worlein Funeral Home, Austin.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Worlein Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.
