John Schlaf is the son of Mathias Schlaf from Virneburg about 25 miles west of the city of Koblenz. John came to the US in 1870 together with his wife Gertrude and infant daughter Mary. He farmed and lived along the MN - IA border from 1870 to 1876 when he moved to Spalding,NE . His brother Stephen Schlaf also moved to Spalding in 1876. John made use of the Homestead Act to aquire land in Nebraska; whereas Stephen bought his farm from the previous owner.
