Mathias Schlaf came to Mitchell county in 1868 together with four of his children, Peter, Stephen, Gertrude and Maria. They were joined two years later by another sibling; John and his wife also named Gertrude. They came from Virneburg kreis Mayen-Koblenz in the Rheinland. They worshiped at St John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg, MN. Great grandfather Mathias is buried in the old cemetery be hind the Church under a red granite tombstone.
